WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT?
The Second “I”
09/06/14 The Second I from Thad Faulk on Vimeo.
The Big Deal is that the Holy Spirit is the Mediator of Jesus to our hearts:
- To convict of sin (John 16:8)
- To convict and convince the lost that Jesus is God’s Righteousness (John 16:8ff)
- To call us to repentance
- To enter into our hearts (new birth) (John 3:5)
- To impart the Eternal Life of Jesus (John 3:36)
- To fill or control us (Eph. 5:18)
- To make Jesus Lord (1 Cor. 12:1)
A Mini Course on “The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit”
- The Person of the Holy Spirit – Acts 2:38, “Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit.” The Greek work for “gift” is “Dorea” which means the Holy Spirit in His Person, who is God’s Gift of Salvation.
- The Performance of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit bestows gifts upon every child of God, which are special abilities which enable them to perform His ministry. (1 Cor. 12; Romans 12; John 14:12).
- The Power of the Holy Spirit.
- Convicts the lost of Jesus, the only Savior.
- Creation of new person through the new birth (2 Cor. 5:17).
- Crucifixion of King Self (Romans 8:13).
- Sanctification of Life (Romans 6 and 8; Titus 2:11-14).
- Constant victory over sin, constant fellowship with the Living Christ, and constant power to witness.
- The Possession of the Total Person or control of your life through His infilling. (Eph. 5:18; Col. 3:15ff)
- Personal Intercessor in Prayer (Romans 8:26) – Praying in the Spirit (Jude 1:20; Eph. 6:18)
- “There are times when we’re not able to say what we ought to say, what we need to say, what we want to say. There are some times when our words just fail. There are times when we just feel damned up, and there are times when our vocabulary seems so inadequate. There are times when we want to praise. There are times when want to plead. There are times when we want to come to God with our petition and we seem so unable to do it. Sometimes, within our bosoms there are sighs that are too deep for words, and we cannot express what is on our hearts. Thank God praying in the Spirit makes up for that. Look in Romans 8:26: “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities, for we know not what we should pray for as we ought but the Spirit Himself maketh intercession with groaning that cannot be uttered.” The Holy Spirit sometimes just takes my groanings that I cannot even utter. Some people say, “Oh, praying in the Spirit is praying in tongues.” No, that’s not what it is. That’s not what he’s talking about. He’s not talking about something that you utter, he’s talking about something you can’t utter. O God, God sometimes our heart is so full that it almost breaks. Sometimes a mother, a father, yearning over a child cannot even verbalize a prayer. Sometimes a person standing at the bed of a sick loved one, at a gravesite, has within him a force about to explode, and all he can do is just sigh, and cry and groan. Thank God the dear Holy Spirit of God knows how to take that prayer and make it acceptable and take things that we cannot even utter. Oh, He takes care of our inexpressibility. Oh, who is the One doing the groaning? It’s really the Holy Spirit within us who is groaning.”[1]
- Personal Authority – to carry out the Great Commission to the ends of the earth (Matt. 28:18-20).
- Prophet of the Future – He will tell us of things to come, like our ultimate physical Resurrection (John 16:13).
- Parakletos – Jesus’ name for the Holy Spirit. Parakletos combines two Greek words, Para, “alongside” and Kaleo, “to call” = One CALLED to the side of every born again person. Thus, he is never alone, for the Holy Spirit is right beside him to be his Helper, Encourager, Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Teacher (John 14:16).
- Privilege – Every believer can know Jesus more completely than those who walked with Him in the days of His flesh because of the Parakletos – John 16:12-13, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”
- Personal Experience – of the Parakletos.
