GODLY SEX: THE GIFT OF THE HOLY TRINITY
1 Cor. 6:9-20
Modern man has lowered sex to the level of animals, even paganism, thinking it is only a mere physical act. As one Harvard student said, “Sex is like eating food. You are hungry, you want it and you get it.”
I. First, God the Father Created our Bodies and endowed them with the wonderful gift of total intimacy. Have you ever thought of the great wonders of our physical body? David did and was overwhelmed, saying “I will praise you (Lord), for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 119:4) “Fearful” connotes something to be revered and held in highest esteem. Thus in the Bible sex doesn’t just refer to the physical body but our entire being – the physical body, the mind, the soul, the emotions. In the Bible two verbs describe the deep meaning of sex:
- YADA (OT) and GINOSCO (NT) Both of these words refer to an intellectual, emotional, experiential and an intimate physical knowledge. So when we examine the relevant Scriptures we note that true sex involves much more than the physical body.
II. Secondly, God the Son
- Redeemed our bodies as well as our souls, and not only did He redeem them, but
- Also made our bodies part of His body. So in 1 Cor. 6:15, Paul asks this question, “Do you not know that your bodies are the members of Christ?” Continuing, he asks in verse 16, “Shall I then take the member of Christ’ body and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not, God forbid, for in sex the two become one flesh.” These words paint a picture of the horribly ungodly of any believer having sex with an immoral person or any person not with his married mate. The Corinthians, converted from paganism, were doing just this, and Paul warns in 1 Cor. 6:10 that “no practicing fornicator, adulterer, homo-sexual, or sodomite will enter the kingdom of God.” Then he immediately shared the good news. 1 Cor. 6:11, “And such were some of you: but you are washed, but you are sanctified, but you are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” Praise the Lord.
III. Thirdly, God the Holy Spirit
- Indwells every born again believer. That was God’s “GREAT MOVE” on the Day of Pentecost and continues forever. On that glorious day, God transferred His residence, his very presence, His home, His Person, from the Holy of Holies in the beautiful physical temple to the redeemed bodies of all believers.
- But not only does the Holy Spirit indwell His people, but He has made them the very TEMPLE (naos) of the living God on the earth. Thus Paul climaxes his marvelous message on the wonderful gift of sex in 1 Cor. 6:18-20:
A. Verse 18 – Flee immorality. Every other sin man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body.” Does this mean that illicit sex is the unpardonable sin? No, but it does mean that such sin devastates one’s life until he is worthless. Ex: Paul – 1 Cor. 9:27. Modern Examples: Pastor of Preston Wood Baptist, the richest Southern Baptist church. I knew this pastor and served with him on the “Church Growth Board, Int’l based in South Korea.
B. Verse 19– “Or do you not know that your body is the TEMPLE (naos) of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own.”
C. Verse 20 – “For you have been bought with a price (the priceless coin of Jesus’ shed blood) THEREFORE, GLORIFY GOD IN YOUR BODY.
How Do We Glorify God in Our Bodies?
- By INOCULATING OURSELF FROM EVERY FORM OF SEXUAL IMMORALITY, physical, mental, emotional, and especially pornographically.
- By enjoying total intimacy in the bond of matrimony.
- By having beautiful children, grand-children because of your beautiful marriage.
- By using our redeemed power as we “present our bodies to Him, as a living sacrifice, holy acceptable unto God, which is our spiritual service of worship (Romans 12:1 NASB).
Final Question: Suppose you are engaged in homo-sexuality or lesbianism; Were you born that way and cannot change? Listen to Paul: “And such (homo-sexual, etc.) were some of you, but you were washed, sanctified, and justified in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit (Holy) of our God.” (1 Cor. 6:11)
